Today is the last day of the Chinese year of the Wood Snake. Snakes shed. The lesson of the last year was letting go. Letting go of loved ones who died, letting go of relationships that changed, letting go of things (so many things), letting go of beliefs and assumptions that are no longer helpful. I had a wonderful coaching session with an Abundance Day client. In one session my client killed her Money Monster 3 TIMES before she really got rid of it. My job is to keep the process going until the monster is really gone. Each time I’d ask, “Is it gone?” she’d find a little bit of monster left. We’d follow that trail to find a deeper level and a truer monster. Until we found the core issue and killed the real life/love/money monster lurking behind the others. Life happens. I’m writing today because I see so many people are going through dramatic life events. A lot of my friends have joined me in the “dead dad club” this year, or suffered comparable losses.

Coping skills and positive thinking are awesome and helpful, and yet I really think we need to make some space to include the reality of grief and challenge as sacred and inevitable parts of our journey.

My experience, definition, and understanding of Love have undergone a dramatic transformation over the last couple of years.

For most of my life love was about what I could get. I think that’s normal for youth.

My 50th birthday should have come with a warning sign saying, “Now we start killing and removing what you love.”

This sounds harsh and horrible… but it’s actually been a profoundly beautiful experience of appreciation, service, and surrender.s
