This week’s invasion of Ukraine feels very personal. My family came from Odessa, Ukraine. My great grandmother was there during the revolt of the battleship Potemkin, and she witnessed the birth of the Russian revolution. She packed up the family and left Odessa, Ukraine for Shanghai a century ago. They purchased train tickets… but the train engine took off and left all the cars behind! After almost a year of walking and hitching rides across Asia, my great grandmother gave surprise birth to my grandmother when the family arrived in Shanghai. For most of my life love was about what I could get. I think that’s normal for youth.
My 50th birthday should have come with a warning sign saying, “Now we start killing and removing what you love.”
This sounds harsh and horrible… but it’s actually been a profoundly beautiful experience of appreciation, service, and surrender.s
