Baby’s first dance competition! Around a year after my father was diagnosed Alzheimer’s, I randomly found myself in a conversation with a Stanford professor who told me social dancing (Tango, Swing, Salsa, etc) is the number one activity in the world to prevent and reverse Alzheimer’s disease. I told my husband Devin, and he immediately signed us up for Argentine Tango lessons in Long Beach. After two months of walking in circles, our Tango teacher suggested we were so bad at Tango we should take some West Coast Swing (Modern Swing) classes to help us be less terrible. LOL. Today is the last day of the Chinese year of the Wood Snake. Snakes shed. The lesson of the last year was letting go. Letting go of loved ones who died, letting go of relationships that changed, letting go of things (so many things), letting go of beliefs and assumptions that are no longer helpful. And this has been going on at an epic scale. Snakes are flexible. I’ll be 59 in two months, and I just learned how to do a neck dip in dance class last week. Now it’s my favorite thing. I froze the first time my teacher tried this, because I didn’t know what was happening. And to be honest, this move looked terrifying when I saw the pros do it. (Know what I mean?)
