My First Dance Competition
Baby’s first dance competition!
Around a year after my father was diagnosed Alzheimer’s, I randomly found myself in a conversation with a Stanford professor who told me social dancing (Tango, Swing, Salsa, etc) is the number one activity in the world to prevent and reverse Alzheimer’s disease.
I told my husband Devin, and he immediately signed us up for Argentine Tango lessons in Long Beach.
After two months of walking in circles, our Tango teacher suggested we were so bad at Tango we should take some West Coast Swing (Modern Swing) classes to help us be less terrible. LOL.
I got hooked.
But I hid in dance classes where I knew my partners and the choreography was predictable.
About a year ago I started dancing “in the wild” at social events–dancing with strangers and learning to adapt to having no freaking clue what was going to happen next in the dance.
This terrified me for a while. Now I love it.
A few weeks ago one of my dance partners told me I should try competing.
Whut?!!!
It’s one thing to manage being judged by your dance partner. But to be judged by a bunch of professionals, with a live audience of competitive dancers, and thousands of swing dance fans watching online, on a floor with much better dancers? Why would anyone do that to themselves?
So of course I did it.
I danced 9 random songs (fast and slow, contemporary and classic) with 9 random partners, didn’t even make it to the next level, and I had the time of my life.
Now I have forensic video evidence of all my dance crimes to review with my teachers and improve for my next competition. Because there will be a next competition.

I love these! Well done, you are so cool – and brave to do competitions! xx
I’ve danced salsa and bachata for years and love it, but don’t think I would ever compete!
