This week’s invasion of Ukraine feels very personal. My family came from Odessa, Ukraine. My great grandmother was there during the revolt of the battleship Potemkin, and she witnessed the birth of the Russian revolution. She packed up the family and left Odessa, Ukraine for Shanghai a century ago. They purchased train tickets… but the train engine took off and left all the cars behind! After almost a year of walking and hitching rides across Asia, my great grandmother gave surprise birth to my grandmother when the family arrived in Shanghai.
